Ohohoho we love a blouge. Actually… Operation Bubbles is a blouge. Unburdened by appellation rules that dictate what grape varieties (and in which concentration) we were allowed in our wine, we mixed 17% white Petit Mensang into our otherwise blend of red grapes to make a wine that is lighter and more acidic than the red-only style we could have used.
“Blanc” + “Rouge” = “Blouge”…. but what does that mean exactly? And what’s more, how do all of the colors of wine come about?
Here’s a cheat sheet for colors in wine:
All of the above methodology will get you your standard colors. But it’s worth noting that there are plenty of wines that look red but have a little bit of white in them. In fact, there doesn’t seem to be anything ENCOURAGING blending red and white wine. But we kind of think there should be.
Think of the possibilities! Could a thiol-heavy Sauvignon Blanc make a fun flavor mix with a cherry- forward Pinot Noir? Probably not!
But… maybe.
